my mate had a silver shark from when it was about 1" within 8 months it grew to 5" and he had to get rid of it, dont know about the others though

the silver is a shoaler that grows to around a foot, need at least a 6 foot tank, the sharks actually need brackish water, and need at least 6 foot and the plec (if common) should get to around a foot or more.

The problem is none of these fish are actually suitable for your tank, try taking them back to your LFS

OK thanks. But the lfs told me they are all fine together.

Demon's right. The lfs don't always care what you stock in your tank as they are making money from you. It's always best to do some research and if you are unsure ask members on here before buying. ;)

A bit of a generalisation there! :shout:

Sizes:
Silver Shark - Can be up to 14" but in an aquarium it's more likely 7"
Colombian Shark - Roughly 13"
Plec - Impossible to say without knowing which species, but likely to be a common plec.. meaning about a foot.

Sorry Timmy.
I should have phrased that better. I meant not all of them care but there are some really good ones about.
We are lucky with our local Maidenhead because they always give us good advice and are always willing to help. On the other hand, we have been to other shops where the staff just don't seem to care.

LOL! No problem.
I spend 5 days a week working at an LFS and I try my hardest to make sure I offer the very best advice I can. Which is why I pounce on people saying all LFS are rubbish! I also work at a Maidenhead... obviously runs in the family!

Try telling that to my 4 10"ers and still growing

Common plec - 12-18" adult size - needs a 4 x 18" x 18" minimum.
Sailfin/gibby - 18-24" adult size - needs a 4 or 5 x 2 x 2ft tank minimum.
Silver shark - 10-12" roughly - only suitable for huuuuuge tanks (8 x 3 x 3ft recommended regularly by other members), you could possibly get away with a 6 x 2 x 2ft tank but they need to be in shoals of 5 or more and are extremely nervous/skittish fish - not called tankbusters for no reason ;)

Never had a columbian shark so cant help you there. As mentionned before, most LFS couldn't give a flying monkeys bumhole whether they tell you the truth, as long as they make a sale. Common plecs and silver sharks for a 29g? I'd go in and give them a good telling if I were you - and take them back while you're on ;)

Edited to add - I put sizes for both common plecs and sailfin/gibbies, as you dont say which type you have and they're the two most common. But if you post a piccie we might be able to id it, it might even be a species suitable for your tank?

My silver sharks got to 7" within 12-18 months from 2". I would say 10" is the minimum you should expect from a bala and don't be surprised to see them get bigger.

I had some silver sharks a few years ago, they are beautiful, but grow very big!! My biggest one grew to 5 inches in length! They are very timid though. I had to move my tank in the end, as the slightest movement scared the life out of them and made them splash around! Ok if you have a massive tank with lots of hidyholes for them!

They are gr8 fish. What size of tank did u have so they got that big.
