Hi

Hope someone can help, I have noticed that My Gourami had swollen up, and really was unsure why. I have just looked at him from above, and see that his scales are sticking out, I presume this is Dropsy. We have just tried to get some Epsom Salts, but unfortunately were unable to obtain any. (due to the time)

I have also read that Tetracycline can be effective.

We have a 3 Litre plastic tank that we could float in the main fish tank as hospital tank, have also turned up the temp slightly we do have some Tetracycline but it is in tablet form for human consumption (300 mg per tablet).

Would there be any way of using this? or part of? obviously bit of an Emergency until we can get to shops/vet tomorrow. and supposing he makes it till then

Can anyone suggest anything?

Thanks for your help

can you take a pic hun
are you sure its not just pregnant female

Is the fish definately a him.
If scales are sticking out it does sound like dropsy.
Once scales stick out last stage of dropsy organ failure.
If you use tetracycline I would only advise it in issolation as it destroys beneifical bacteria in the filter.
Epson salt baths to help draw fluids out.

I initially thought that he might have been a she, and was gravid, but he is very listless, just hanging around the inlet pipe for a couple of days now, also not eating and definitely has the pine cone effect of scales due to the swelling.

The water params are 0 Ammonia, 0 Nitrite. 40 Nitrate

I can post a pic but taken on mobile phone so not that clear (and you cant see the pine cone effect in the photo).

thanks

I found a fish disease site that said to add 10 mg of Tetracycline per litre. Think I am gonna try that, definitely in isolation

Fingers crossed

The little tank that you are going to put in the tank it dosn't have any holes in it does it. As the med will leak into the tank.
How many gallons is the little tank as you need to know for the dosage.

Hi,

No, no holes have worked out the dosage, based on 10mg/L the original tank we were going to use is 3 litres, plastic, but my partner picked it up when full of water and cracked it !!!!!(so clever)

Now had to improvise and will have to use a 1 litre plastic jug that has only ever been used for fish related stuff. Have decreased the dosage to a third of what we originally worked out.

Hope he pulls through

You need an airstone as med reduce 02 in the water.

Hopefully will be OK, being a Labyrinth fish. All our airstones are too powerful for that size container
