I have three HOB bio-wheel filters with my 3 FW tanks, all of which are under 60 gallons. I have never had any problems with them, and my fish have always been on the healthy side save for the occasional ick with a new fish here and there or something of that nature. What Im wondering is if I should have been giving these filters regular cleanings? Alot of people are telling me I should on the net, but then alot of people as well say that you shouldnt because it will kill the beneficial bacteria while ur cleaning them. I admitt I have always been under the impression that you are not suppose to clean HOBS once they are up and running, but now im not so sure.

What do yall do?

(EDIT) Oh btw I have had my tanks with bio-wheel hobs for 2 years now and have nver cleaned them, just fyi, duno if thats bad or good...

You should definitely clean your HOB's. When you notice a reduced rate in water flow. If you're worried about killing off beneficial bacteria, then rinse them in a pail with water you take out from the aquarium.

I have at least 2 filters on every tank so I clean one and then a week later clean the other. Probably averages out to once a month or so.

Edit: per your biowheels, clean the media but leave the wheels alone.

I should also add that I tend to clean a bit often and if you cleaned the media every other month that should be fine also. Mainly just look for a reduction in flow and you'll come up with the what works best for your bioload.

yea i figured my 42g needed some more filatration so i got a H.O.T Magnum canister filter to help the bio-wheel
