I want to get some platties i think. I know they have babies a lot but i have big fish in a 55 gal that i could feed them to and raise my own feeders.

The tank is 10 gal. Don't worry i know about cycling and stuff i have a few years expirence with tanks but i've never had platties.

has anyone else done this? any advice? how many shoud i get?

any advice welcome

thanks :good:

You should have a ratio of 1 male to every 2 female, because the male pesters the female so much, it helps give the females a break. I believe you could have about 9 platies in a 10g but I'm not sure... Also, you may want a seperate tank to raise fry in.

i do have a separate 10 gal with an underground filter and airstone i thought would be perfect for the job of raising fry.

I think it's best to get all females so you don't have to worry about them fighting.

9 platies is way too much in a 10 gallon; they are quite messy. All females make for a pleasant tank, but eventually the supply of sperm will dry up. I would go for something in the region of 1 male and 3-4 females; that should be enough to ensure a steady supply of fry. Make sure you feed them well- bloodworm or similar once or twice a week instead of the flakes, and veggies several times a week.

But that isn't a problem if they're used as feeders. If need be, then the newborn fry can be dumped in the main tank without even growing them on.

You only really need one male for however many females you'll have.

a lot of plants, select one type of platyand keep w/ it so they dont cross breed an turn out brown.

well color could be important if i plan to give any fry as gifts to other fish loving friends. but i was considering all one type maybe mickey mouse platies, they're cute and colorful. they are also cheap where i live.

what do you think?

Also what is the best way to make sure to tell them apart - females and males
