Hi all,did a water change yesterday about 25% maybe bit more, this morning dollar is dead and two tetras, and all other tetras are swimming at top of tank.
Looking at water safe bottle looks like have put over two annd half times the amount supposed to use.

any ideas what i can do,are they all gonna die??

if i where you and your sure its the safe water overdosing your fish id do as many water changes as i could and put the right amount of stuff in asap but i might be wrong miss wiggle or another far more knowelegeable member will be able to help you better but they might want tank stats so have them to hand
regards scoti :good:

If that was my tank my first response would be to do a massive water change - 50% at least and not add the full dose of water conditioner to the new batch of water, since the remaining water in the tank will still have high levels of conditioner in it. Strange, I was told by another fishkeeper that you can't kill fish by overdosing on conditioner - but looks like he could be wrong.

Anyway, whatever the reason, the fish are in stress and the water needs sorting out. I'd do a water change and give it a day or two and see how things are then (keeping regular watch on them), maybe do a water test to put your mind at rest that all your levels are ok.

nice one for that done 20% water change again today, got horrible feelin that bucket used yesterday to put new water in had been used before with bleech maybe, oops, dont let ya girlfriend fill the tank for you.
gonna monitor for the day if any more die gonna do 50% water change, what you reckon???

personally id do another 25% and then monitor what happens. Are the fish breathing fast or anything?
scoti :good:

not sure if you can or can't overdose on dechlorinator never done it that i know of lol maybe ask that question in another thread

If Tapsafe was as dangerous as to kill fish via overdose, i am sure they would only sell it in smaller single shot portions or at least have warnings on the back.

You have not mentioned a water test? If you test the water, you should be able to see a spike in the amount of ammonia if you did use a bucket containing bleach or some other household cleaning solution.

I think athena's advice was also good regarding a 50% water change.

Gourami's seem okay just tetras at top of tank and they do seem to be breathing rather fast..

done 50% water change with minimal tap safe, fish seem to be doing better tetras swimming at bottom now.
Cant believe my Dollar died though

Thanks for help

Glad to see you might have it under control now and hopefully you won't lose any more fish. Oh dear, bleach in tank water definitely not a good idea LOL but I guess these things can happen to the best of us.

For example, my mum has a habit of wanting to do housework when she comes visiting (typical mother) and I once caught her about to fill my "strictly for fish" bucket with washing up liquid to wash some paintwork with. Argh! If I hadn't caught her in time my poor fishes could have really suffered on their next water change.

Perhaps we should label our buckets, eh? "HANDS OFF - FOR FISH ONLY!"

All the best - Athena

Hey Athena - your mum's very welcome to come visit me any time she gets the urge to do some housework! I'll even buy a new bucket!
