Ok so, I printed out some posts/information and went to Aquarium Adventure today to ask them why they had sold me freshwater fish as brackish fish. I was told the brackish specialist was out today and to come back tomorrow at 10AM. I will be there promptly at 10AM.

This is where I need your help. I'd like to collect some posts/information about my fish in question. I will remind you of my original tank fish. Ones that were sold to me FROM AQUARIUM ADVENTURE as BRACKISH fish have *** next to them.

Brackish Fish Include
1. Three Bichir (Grey, Albino, and Ornate***)
2. Two Mono Fish***
3. Knife Fish
4. Peacock Eel***
5. African Butterfly***
6. Moray Eel***
7. Green Puffer
8. Elephant Nose***
9. Baby Whale***
10. Rope fish/eel***

Please leave out any non-needed comments about my setup and stick to topic, I want this to be an informative post I can bring to the pet shop so I can discuss with them the fish in question. Any responses and any links to fact sheets about these types of fish is appreciated

Thanks!

1. Three Bichir (Grey, Albino, and Ornate***)
No, not brackish water fish.
2. Two Mono Fish***
Yes, brackish water fish, ideally around SG 1.010 once mature.
3. Knife Fish
Not brackish water fish.
4. Peacock Eel***
A very few Mastacembelidae are found in brackish water. Without a Latin name can't be sure about your fish (several species are sold as "peacock eels") but most should tolerate up to SG 1.003, maybe even 1.005, without problems. That said, none need brackish water conditions, and I wouldn't recommend any of them for brackish water systems.
5. African Butterfly***
No.
6. Moray Eel***
Yes.
7. Green Puffer
Yes.
8. Elephant Nose***
No way.
9. Baby Whale***
Arghhh!!! No.
10. Rope fish/eel***
Very slight tolerance for brackish water conditions; comparable to spiny eels. Certainly found in the low salinity parts of the Niger Delta but not otherwise a euryhaline fish. SG 1.003 or less.

It goes without saying your lack of research prior to purchase has caused major problems for you and your fish. Relying on retailers is fine up to a point, but their knowledge of oddball fish is frequently limited at best. There are plenty of good aquarium encyclopaedias out there, any one of which would have helped here. On top of that there are two English language brackish water books, mine and the Aqualog one by Frank Shaefer; either of those would provide you with all the information needed.

Even putting aside water chemistry requirements, the combination of sizes, social behaviours, diets, and predatory instincts mark out this selection as, well, "challenging" at best. It's all very well telling people not to comment on your selection of fish, but it really is an abysmally poor combination. No-one who actually read up on these fish would even think about keeping them together, hence my assumption that you had no idea what you were buying before you got them. That isn't something I personally like to encourage, for I hope obvious reasons.

Please take care to research fish before spending your money. Why not buy an aquarium book?

Cheers, Neale

I do belive that Neale has summed it up perfectly well with:

"Arghhh!!! No." and "No way"
