Hi everyone-we’re new to this, and have a tank we’ve now had in place for about a month. Unfortunately I had to put my platy in it before I’d cycled it for as long as seems to be suggested, as our previous tank sprung a leak! But I’d treated the water, and added a starter to get the bacteria going. The sponge filter is also out the previous tank. I’ve checked the water and it’s all in the right place for nitrate, nitrite, chlorine, total hardness, total alkalinity, carbonate, ph and ammonia. It was previously showing slight ammonia so I changed 25% of the water and added some interpet ammonia remover and now it’s not showing any on the test. But my one adult platy is as per the photo with some kind of white ring and legion, and as it’s had about 20 babies a couple of weeks ago, I’m worried they might get the same if it’s viral. Can anyone advise on what’s going on with the fish? The tank has a stick to the back Ciano filter, a Ciano dosator fish protector, a heater (water temp is 23.9c) and a sponge air filter thing.

Thanks in advance

First, I will mention that I am not a fish disease person. There are more knowledgeable people in this group.

Looking at the photo, I see two things, first I see the lesion which to me looks like an injury that is possibly getting worse. Second, I see a lot of little white marks on the tail fin and dorsal fin. The little white marks might be something like ich or it might be a reaction to mechanical damage, or perhaps just material from the tank stuck to the mucus coating. In any case I would first try to get a better view of the spots on the fish, if it is ich then that would be your immediate concern, do the other fish have any spots?

There is not much you can do about the lesion at this time other than keep the tank clean and perform frequent water changes to keep the free-swimming bacteria levels down to reduce the risk of secondary infections. I don't know much about the Ciano fish protector product, too me it seems like a questionable product, I question what plant extracts they use. I have never had to use something like that. FYI I see you are using Ciano filter, most of the filters do not require consumables, the filter media just needs cleaning from time to time, just a heads up for you.

There are some questions other people will want to know about the tank in general:
1) How large is the tank
2) What are the ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels, good is not descriptive enough because there is some mis-information available online. The ammonia and nitrite need to be zero.
3) What are the other fish and how many are there

Hope your fish gets better.

I have nothing but bad news. The platy lesion is possibly mycobacteriosis - fish tb. It's incurable, and quite virulent when it has broken out into a lesion. It's also very common in pet store platys.

The tail spots could be Ich or Epistylis parasites - most likely they are a secondary result of the fish being quite ill.

I also see white stringy feces, which suggest an internal bacterial infection consistent with Mycobacteria. You can never know for 100% without a lab, but since we don't have one at hand, that lesion does look very familiar. I'm sorry to say that.

I would immediately euthanize the fish as these things spread quickly when their host dies in the tank.

Thank you both much appreciated. We’ve had the fish now since 18th Jan and haven’t introduced anything new to the tank-is that consistent with however long the Tb takes to appear? I couldn’t see anything on it yesterday. I do hope the babies aren’t affected but to be fair we already lost one Platy; but I thought that was down to water quality.
