Help with my first plants.

Hi guys, I've had my tank for a few months now and I've decided to go for real plants, now heres where I need your help. I have a 42 UK gal tank with medium lighting, a PH of 7.8 ( constant ) and a KH of 9 degs ( 161 ppm) I've been told this is important. I would like a variety of plants but I don't like the idea of adding co2. Any thoughts or suggestions very welcome. Thanks.
