I recently bought new rock for my 30 gal aquarium to replace the old rock. After soaking and changing the water on the new rock for four days I swapped the new rock for the old rock when I did a partial water change and most of the fish died in 48 hours. This was not a new aquarium but several years old which is about how long I had had most of the fish. The deceased were harlequin rasboras, tetras and barbs. I tested the water for nitrates, nitrites, chlorine etc and nothing was out of whack. The remaining fish seem fine for the time being but I am wondering if I should do a partial water change again, let it ride for a week or two or take the remaining fish and put them in a different tank ( I really don't want to risk killing off another tank of fish). Any thoughts on what I did wrong would be helpful since I was going to do the same thing on my other tanks but now am afraid to go through with it. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

What type of rock is it.
Check your ph.
What did you soak the rock in, did you rinse it well.

I checked the ph and it's 7.2 and the rock was rinsed in water that I bought at the fish store which is also where I get water for the aquariums.

Did you use a declorinator.
Any fish gasping.

Was the rock bought from an lfs so it aqua safe.

Yes chlorine tested nil the fish aren't gasping. The rock I put in was lace rock, onyx, zebra rock, and some jasper that was all purchased from the fish store that I've been going to for years.

Whats jasper sorry.

I would take the rock out for now.
If you added live plants without sterlising them you could of fetched something into the tank.
Any signs of flicking and rubbing.

I would remove the rock just to be on the safe side.
Run some new black carbon.
Keep an eye on the fish.

Had any storms in your area.

The fish are not acting strangely at all. If I take the rock out should I do a partial water change or just let it ride for awhile I don't want to stress the remaining fish any more than I have.

Just remove the rock and run some black carbon.
The fish could of already been ill.
Or its the water or the rock, but would of expected gasping or darting around.
Did you mess about with the tank long as that can stress fish.

Did you keep the fish in the tank as you did your decoration/water changes or do you place them in another container? Obviously, you've been caring well for these fish for the last few years. I'm sorry for your loss.

Jasper is a common aquatic rock mostly Red Jasper...it's mentioned in The Wolf's brilliant rock thread which might be worth checking if still hovering around :good: sorry for your loss
