Hello there, I am new to fish keeping and unfortunately I seem to be doing everything wrong! Please help me!

I have a Juwel Vision 180, I cycled my tank for 3 weeks and then added 5 neons and 6 plants. two weeks later I brought my plec and a week later I brought 5 guppies. The day I added my guppies a neon got very sick and died that evening, two guppies then died the next day for no apparant reason so I treated with a general tonic and then lost another two guppies, I did a 30% water change and then two more 20% and lost another guppy. Then saw white spots on my final neons appearing, so I treated for whitespot and after having treated for whitespot I was forced to treat for mouth rot. 10 days later my remaining 3 neons and plec seemed fine so I started to stock up. (throughout this my PH has been 7.4, my nitrites 0, ammonia 0, nitrates 10 and hasn't changed and I regularly gravel vac).

I added another five guppies, 5 cardinals, an albino shark and 2 chocolate gouramies. After putting them in my water I noticed about 10 minutes later that one had white spots (still has white spots) but the others were fine. They have been in my tank for 2 days and after watching them all last night and they being perfectly fine I woke to a very sick looking cardinal his tail/fin looked completely shreaded in fact it was beyond his fin, it looked as though his whole back end had been ravaged and he died. Is this fin rot? It happened so quick! And what about the other one with whitespots, what do I treat first? Can I treat both at the same time? Please someone help, I am about to give up this hobby and its such a shame as i love to watch them.

This is a prime example of why (especially in larger communities) you need to invest in a quaranteen tank :) If you go to the fish emergencies page there are plenty of people with experience who can advise you. good luck.

I am seriously considering investing in one, the only problem is I had to beg my boyfriend to let me have this tank in the house, he won't stand for a second :-( Thank you, I will go and take a look at the page now.

Haha, I wish my gf begged for another fish tank :p She's barely interested in this one :p Good Luck!

Same here, he doesn't quite get what all of the fuss is about and finds it highly amusing that I sit and stair at the fish tank more than the television lol.

I am afraid I couldn't find anything to help on the emergency page and no-one has gotten back to me, but I have just noticed that my chocolate gourami has a cloudy eye so I am going to do a 25% water change and treat with melafix which looks as though it covers a multitude of sins (all except white spot and velvet). I can't bear to loose my gouramies! And I really don't know how I could get so many diseases in my tank all in one go! I am never buying from that shop again!
