my 3 g shrimp tank is having some problems. a few days ago i started to battle hydras. after doing a complete extraction of animals and plants i scrubbed it with very hot water, boiled my d wood, and pruned my plants. i then took out 3/4 of the gravel and made it 3/4 sand. i now have what i believe, a planaria/hyrda/fluke/and or some long thin worm problem. i just looked deep into the tank to find hundreds if not thousands of small worms wiggling about in the current. some are larger than others and i feel that theyre reproducing. on my drift wood which i boiled, now has small fuzzy areas in the cracks in some parts. my shrimp have been swimming like they wana get out. i hope these arent parasites.

i used some meds for external parasites (added a few drops) and theyre still there. theres 1 ghost shrimp and 4 beautiful cherrys in there. amazon sword, micro sword, and cryptocoryne are the plants. i use a few drops of ferts and stats are all good. i do bi weekly water changes (30% each). the filter has the 3 stages covered and cycles itself every 2 minutes.

Id like to use salt but am worried for my shrimps. IS SALT OK FOR MY SHRIMPS???

i dont want to lose this tank so thanks for all your time!

If it were me, I would remove the shrimp to a container, with new water (dechlored of course) and scrap everything in that tank.

Take the filter media out and thoroughly clean it, yes it may cause you to lose the bacteria but it would be the only way to be sure you dont take any of the nasties with you when you put it back.

Scrub the tank with boiling water and a bleach solution, rinse, rinse and rinse lots more, before putting the water back in and re-adding the shrimp.

For some reason the hydra, planaria are thriving in the tank and I cant think of any other way to eradicate them all.

You will of course need to cycle the tank again, can you use some mature media from your other tank to do this?

EDIT: Can you not put the shrimp in the other tank for a few days, just to be sure all the boogers have gone?

well ive already completely cleaned it to get rid of the hydras....they came back almost instantly.

i just need to know if salt is bad for shrimp and if it will kill these worms?? how much salt, and is table salt ok?
