male Siamese fighter
probably a swordtail, but could be a platy, and could be male or female; I can't see well enough to sex in for certain
male Dalmation molly
female (not very well looking) cherry barb.
Thank u so much!
I have just been given these fishes. Can you advise why u dont think the cherry barb looks well.
Also do they get well with other fish?
Thanks )
1- Siamese Fighter
2- Male Variatus Platy
3- Male Dalmation Molly
4- Male Cherry Barb.
I suspect the cherry barb as being a juvenile male, too young to be in full colours yet, though already has more red (especially on tail) than a female will get, also the colour of the fish is more towards pink than bronze.
I doubt the cherry barb is ill as much as it appears to have a genetic(?) deformity of the spine and is a bit kinked. Have seen a *lot* like this recently, that said, maybe it isn't genetic as much as poor water and cramped conditions on import because most I have been watching recently have straightened out again over the period of a couple of months.
I see. It makes sense as when I got the tank the water was far too filthy and no filter. They have looked like they hadnt been looked after for a while. Poor buggers!
All good now. Clean water, filter, light, etc )
They are all ok with each other... clearly... but depends what other fish. You don't want to keep the Siamese fisher with anything nippy, aggressive or with long fins (so no tiger barbs, cichlids, angels, guppies etc)
i thought Siamese and Guppy could be together according with liveaquaria.com cos it shows them both as "Temperament: Peaceful"
Anyway you have been very helpful, but I have got one more question lol. Wheres the best online place to get an aquarium background. I have been searching, but... not very impressed.
I would agree... both species are relatively 'peaceful' though both species are considerably irritating to other fish with their crazy behaviour and annoying flappy tails.
As for being with each other, the general rule is 'don't keep long finned fish together'. The Siamese normally view the guppies as small fighters (because of their bright flappy tails) and will start hassling and attacking them. Generally the guppies win because people tend to have more of them and because they are faster.
They may live together for a time but sooner or later, they will just attack each other.
Yes they are though to be fair to the fish, you will need to find them some mates, the cherry barbs especially are a shoaling species and can be really quite miserable and timid on their own...
