It all started with one little beta... the next thing I know BAM! I'm addicted to fish! My husband says I'm addicted more to my fishtank upkeep then I am the fish themselves. But.., I love my fish too! I'm sure you understand!
From that one little beta I have moved up to a nice 10 Gallon tank with Guppies, Platties, Ghost Shrimp and one Painted Glass (his buddies didn’t fair so well, but I think that was due to the petshop and not me). (I still have the beta, he has a 5 gal tank now all to himself).
My girl guppy went and got herself knocked up! And I couldn’t stand to see her in the breeder box so I got a little 2 gallon tank to make a nursery and she had 2 little baby guppies. (She may have had more then 2 I'm sure she probably chomped on a few of them but I guess that’s the nature of the beast.) One was born w/o a life and the other one is doing amazingly well! Once “MostAwesomeFishInTheWorldWhoILoveWithAllMyHeartMoreThenAnyOtherFishThatEverLivedMINE!” (that’s the babies name) is a little bigger I will move him to the 10 gal with mom and the rest of the crew.
So now I have my sights set on a 55 gallon tank! Ohhh! I would like to keep mudskippers. I'll probably get the tank and stand here in a week or two but I'm pretty sure its going to be at least 6 months (maybe more) before I'm ready for it to be inhabited by others. I figure I'm going to take a long time setting up the land to water ratio, the design of the rocks, etc. And.. I'm just plain not ready yet. I still have a lot to learn before I go adding life to the tank! So I wanted to bounce a few things off of you all.. get opinions, suggestions, recommendations etc. I seek the guidance of those of you who have come before me in the land of mudskippers and brackish tanks! Please let me know if any of my goals are unrealistic as well!
I have a few inspirations for my tank (umm err should I say paludarium?).
Of course without saying this is breath taking and I would kill to have something like this

But honestly, I know I do not have the ability to create that! So I'm going to do what I can with what I can buy
. None the less I'm still going to look at that a1000 times a day and long for that setup
.
I think this is a cute setup and possibly pretty easily obtainable

One of the things I like the most about this setup is the little water wall that sprays upwords!
And this one is the one that inspired me to want mudskippers

I love this setup a lot..
Here is my question... being a n00b I need to know about filtration. Obviously with these type tanks your not going to use a hang over the back of the fishtank type filter system. I have read a lot of the threads here about keeping these type tanks and seen people mention everything from live rock filtration to mangroves and canister filters. I honestly do not know a lot about filters right now. I need to learn. Help!
Note: I do not like live plants. I would rather all my plants be artificial.
I want my water to always look CLEAN not muddy or dirty.
Sand Substrate – Its apparent these setups call for sand. How do you clean / care for that? Just leave it alone?
Heat – how are you heating the water in the lower part of the Paludarium?
Humidity – I read somewhere humidity was important for the skippers, how are you ensuring proper humidity levels?
Waterfall – I would love to create some type of waterfall in my tank! I think it would complement the small pools wonderfully, maybe this is key to my filtration system? Suggestions?
I could ask a million questions, but I think I have asked enough to get the ball rolling, I'm sure you can tell what I'm looking for! (To pick your brains!!!!)
Thank you all for your time and help! I look forward to my continued reading on these forums!!
