Last week I added half a dozen new plants to my fish tank and 24 hours later all of my Amano shrimp were dead!... All the fish are ok and I'm now left wondering what happened.

The only idea I could come up with is that maybe the plants were treated with anti-snail treatment containing copper. Is this possible? I've yet to get back to the shop to ask if they treat the plants. When I bought them, the sales assistant knew I had shrimp.

My shrimp started dying after I added some plants from java last week. And that was after soaking them for over 48 hours. So even if your lfs doesnt use copper, if they just got the plants in, it could still have an effect.

Luckily I had some carbon lying about so I had no noticeable casualties.

Lesson: if you keep shrimp, always have carbon available for emergencies.

I had the same poblem. Just received some new cuttings, added them to my tank and within 24 hrs my large ghost shrimp died. I also have a smaller one in the tank but cant seem to find him anywhere. Im keeping my fingers crossed he is shedding his shell under some wood or something.

where did you buy them from?

there was quite a big thread on this subject...one forum member lost all his cherry shrimp when he added plants from pets at home....

they tested the water for copper but all the results were negative. hopefully he will see this thread and be able to advise you....maybe try taking a a sample of their water and testing it for copper, if it positive then they should reimpurse you with credit or shrimps...

That was me...If they're PetsAtHome plants speak to the manager of the store, or alternatively, customer services online, they reply within the same day.

I had the same thing happen to my cherry shrimps.

I then read that the pesticides on the plants kill shrimp.

To avoid this it is recommened that you leave the plants soaking in water for 2 or 3 days.

Got the plants from a LFS - not Pets at home. Went back the following week asking them about snail treatments/copper in the water and they said the don't treat the plants with anything at all. I have bought a couple of plants from them before and things were fine but I guess maybe this could have been a bad batch.

I don't have any way of checking for copper so it was just their word against mine.

Very similar situation to this thread. Do the two of you live close enough for it to be an issue with the area?
