First off, tanks plans. I currently have a 10gl tank with only water it in. I'm using a Whisper 10gl pump with a bio filter(Bio-beads)and sponge. I plan to add 15lbs of gravel and let it start cycling. First question.

The ammonia right now is sitting at 8.0 on the charts (GREEN, API master test kit, liquid). Do I leave this ammonia in there to start the cycle or do I buy some ammonia remover?

I want this tank to be a guppie comminuty so what noob plants are best for a 10gl guppie comminuty? Plants are the only thing I could like to have in the tank.

What combinations of fish can I have with the guppies (i want at least 3-4 males)??? Im knew to fish so I'm not familiar with all of there names and such, but I have read about corys, rabo things and other small fish.. it would be nice if you could recommend some combos. (not looking for female guppies, don't want kids :))

0Have you added ammonia to get this reading? (You do NOT get a reading of 8.0 ammonia in tap water!). If so, I would dilute it a little with a water change and then carry on doing a fishless cycle- you only need a reading of 4.0-5.0 to start the fishless cycle. If not, check the test.

As for the tank, easy plants include Java fern, Java moss, hygrophila (fast-growing), anubias (expensive and slow-growing but hardy and looks good).

I would suggest a setup of 5 male guppies and 5-6 dwarf corydoras (habrosus, hastatus or pygmaeus).

Other nice combo with the guppies might be cherry shrimps.

I have not added any ammonia to the tank. Before I removed gravel and decor it was an overstocked tank and I was over feeding. Now I have the whole only as much as they can eat thing down pat. I will do a 30-40% water change then add 15lbs of gravel to get it started. And thing else but corydoras? I'm not to fond of there catfish like wiskers...

Thanks for the plant list!

That could be because they are catfish ;) Lol.

I think you need to do a little more research on the cycling process :) Im not sure what exactly you've already done but sounds like a fish-in cycle?

Fish you can keep in a 10g are these.

I actually believe I have the cycle process down pat... there are no fish in the 10gl what so ever, just water. I'm adding the gravel today. I plan to let the 10gl cycle without fish. I have 2 fish (cichlids) in a 20gl tank. In that tank im doing a fish in cycle and things are running smoothy at .25 ammonia .0 No2 .0 No2 and 8.0 PH.

Thanks for the link!

I have 4 male guppies in my tank. Guppies mix well with tetras in particular. i have 10 neon tetras in with my guppies and they are doing very well and i would expect that most tetras would be okay with guppies. The main problem with guppies is other fish nipping their tails so make sure that any fish you buy wont be nippers e.g bumblebee gobies are particularly bad for it.

Thanks for the reply, but I'm leaning towards german blue rams and some corydoras.

you have to be careful with tetras as sometimes they get nippy although i have had no problems with guppies and cardinals and neons

I'm a little confused (but I'm very old); you say you're going to add the gravel and let the tank cycle, but you're not adding ammonia. To cycle a tank, you either need to add ammonia to start the cycle, or get some cycled filter media. You can't just ''let it start cycling''. Also, with four Guppies in a 10G, you won't have room for a great deal more. Even small fish need plenty of swimming space.
