i posted this in oddball but i need a faster responce, i want to get a gsp and was wandering can i just get a regular fish tank and add the salt and just moniter the levels or do i need a special tank?

I know they need pretty heavy brackish water but nothing more. I'm not sure you will get much response tonight as the forum is pretty slow this time of day with all the members across the pond already in bed as it is approaching 1 AM in the UK.

I have a GSP named Chubbs, I've had him five years. He is a great fish and just so adorable.

Yes, you can use a regular tank. You will want to purchase a hydrometer to measure the salinity.

When you first get him he will probably be in freshwater but ask and that way you can match up the salt to theirs.

You slowly add more salt when you clean the tank. Very little each time so you don't stress him out.

You will do this until you get to saltwater. Mine is in full saltwater now. I started out as freshwater.

They also need snails since their teeth grow and they file them down this way. Their an amazing fish and you won't regret getting one.

Here are some pictures of Chubbs;

To start with I would add 1tbs per five gallons of water. Each time add one more tablespoon. It helps to keep a chart of how many tablespoons you are adding each time. Do this until you reach full saltwater

What I do is in a bucket add the salt, fill it up with hot water mix it up good and put an air stone in it and leave it over night. Then when I'm filling my tank up with the hose slowly add the salt water in the tank while filling the tank back up.

Always measure the salinity of the water after. I also measure the salinity in the bucket.

I just said the heck with keeping my GSP at 1.015 and went to 1.018. I bought some damselfish today too. Saltwater tanks are perfect for GSPs.

Is your GSP getting along with your damselfish? I would LOVE to see pictured of them and your tank.
