So I was at my local walmart looking for fish supplys & possible comunity fish for my 55Gal tank & I came across Green spotted puffer fish.. Of course I didnt buy them, because I have not much of clue on how to take care of them.. thats why im here...

First off, What species is the Green spoted puffer fish? Do you know what kind they are from walkmart? I have done much reaserch but there are different types & Idk how to tell them apart!

Second what are the water requirments? I have heard many different things, but mainly since i dont know the scientific name of them, I dont know which to fallow. I have mostly heard brakish (why Im here)

What type of tank do they like..? Do they like alot of light or low light? Live plants or are fake plants okay? Rocks & drift wood? Open spaces? size of tank? Sutible tank mates, if any?

What do they eat.. I know they are agressive, so if I buy some, they will get there own tank. Also do they need to be in a group of puffers, or kept alone?

Thank you.. I wanted to buy them so bad, but I want to be responsible & make sure i know what im doing & I need to cycle a new tank anyways which will take several weeks & I need to fins out what they need.. SO any tips would also be needed

THank you! :good:

Hi
If they are true Green Spotted Puffer they will be brackish when young to full marine when adults.
Green spotted puffer, Tetradon nigriventris This is the real name

Well I dont know if they are true puffers or not!

I have heard there are 3 kinds that are very similar.. the one I know isnt it, but the other two are much alike.. & I didnt recall there being a name for the Spotted puffers when i was there & walmart isnt the most reliable when it comes to fish.. or anything  But they both require different water requirements. The one needs freash, the other need brackish..

I mean they are really cute & I would like some but I refuse to buy them untill i am sure of the care they need.

Are the true GSP in your siggy? if so then I do not think that they are that. If so I have made a mistake.

But if anyone has any info.. so the details are vague, but I dont know how else to explain.

The fish itself:

Small (will grow)
bright Green with black spots, off white belly.

Does anyone have A pic?

They are Figure 8 Puffers in Hayleamorgan's Sig,which are a low end brackish fish.
Search Green Spotted Puffers on google...you'll find info and pics on them there. From your description, that does sound like them. If they are well looked after and cared for properly (ie gradually brought up to full marine water as they grow), they can get 4-6 inches.
Do alot of reading on them, there's alot to say that you'll find on google...will save us alot of time. If you have any questions, ask.
They can be rather aggressive, as they can be fin nippers etc. People usually leave out tankmates but my two were fine with Mollies, Columbian Cat Sharks and Knight Gobies (all brackish fish). Feeding wise they require frozen/live foods such as bloodworm, mussel, cockle etc..they will not take flake or pellet, as you will find out in google. They also need feeding snails, cockel in shell etc as they need hard shelled foods to wear down their teeth, as they can grow too long for the puff and result in him not being able to eat.
Lighting wise, they arent bothered tbh. You will struggle with plants in brackish water, but stuff like java fern and vallis
do well up to a low salinity.
Puffers are very intelligent and get bored easily...you can tell if theyre bored as they will just swim up and down the glass. Rocks are fine, as long as they are smooth. Bogwood is fine also up to a certain salinity.
A good guide is to go with one GSP per 30 gallons of water, due to their potential size and aggression. You cxan grow them up in a 20 gal but they may need upgrading/

If you have any Q's, add them on here

The three commonly traded Puffers that look like Green Spotted Puffers are all brackish in sum degree, T Biocellatus (Fig8 Puffer), T Nigriventris (Green Spotted Puffer) and T Fluviatalis (Ceylon Puffer)

GSP do far better in mid-high brackish waters
Fig8s do far better in low-mid brackish waters
Ceylons do far better in mid-high brackish waters.

The puffers readily available (& very poorly treated--usually in horrible shape) at
Walmart is the T nigroviridis. See here for more info: An Introduction to Green Spotted Puffers
If you want a healthy, long-lived specimen, I suggest not buying from that establishment.
