i just been to my local MA and they have started putting warnings on all the monster fish, but instead of writing grows large or 24"+ they are now showing you how big a tank you will really need for these monsters.
eg.on the tank with the pacu in they have a picture of a transit van and it says you will need a tank this big to keep this fish.what a great idea to let people know what they are getting into
lots of other fish like red bellies and tiger shovelnoses had these warnings on too

That's great to hear. I would certainly be more willing to travel to the bigger chain stores if they're making it clearer for fishkeepers what they're letting themselves in for.

Sounds much better than my local pets at home which has started labelling new fish they're getting in as "tank busters" but not explaining what that means. And they include gymnothorax tile, the "freshwater eel", tiger shovelnoses, pirahna, frontosa, and oscars. Madness.

its definatly a step in the right direction and hopfully the whole chain will adopt this idea :)
it might save a lot of big fish ending up in small tanks :)

Fanstastic idea, and good that they put a familiar object on the sign (transit van) so it gives people a good idea of just how big a tank they might need.

The MA in Crowland have some very large bala sharks to show what size they can grow to before people buy them, same with the common plecs.

Apart from the fact that none of the employees take much notice anyway...

Some people really don't care how big fish grow. The lfs I went to today had a couple of 5/6" balas in a tank (looked to me like someone had brought in a load of big fish, they had some big tinfoil barbs and a giraffe cat too), someone went 'Wow, can silver sharks really grow *that* big? Better buy small ones then'.... Fool.

The most annoying/disturbing thing i heard from a lfs employee is "They stop growing if they're in a small tank so you dont have to worry about them getting to big"

And even more disturbing: "They don't grow *that* fast so your tank is ok for them" like you plan on killing it at some point so it's ok to keep it in a tiny tank o_O
