I'm not very happy with the filter I currently have in my 16 gall....I was wondering if anyone could suggest a nice, effective small filter?

Thanks.

For small cheep filters I reallylike the aquaclear filters....Ive used many brands and these are easy to use, and VERY quiet.

Penguin/Marineland aren't bad. I've used those for years and never had a failure with them. There's also Aquaclear which I've never used but had hear are good. I've also heard people have had trouble with them.

I dont like penguin marineland because the carbon is built into the filter...so there is an increased expense and it is a problem when you need to medicate fish.

Well what do you currently have ? :)

Fluval 2. It's not very good. I keep coming home and finding it's randomly stopped working. Not very reliable at all. And doesn't seem to do a particularly good job of cleaning the water, though I rinse it regularly and put an extra poly sponge in there every week.

Don't forget, whoever, that Penguins etc. are not available in the UK. HOBs in generally are rarely sold, although I do have one shop near me who carries a few Aquaclears.. Is it an old style Fluval, or a Plus? The Pluses are pretty good, but maybe an Eheim? External or internal Aquaball?

Suffice to say Fluval's aren't my favourite brand - and the internals especially cause grey hairs and frustration. So understand where you are coming from (I have a couple of the old style internal Fluvals as well as a whole range of the Fluval + (2,3 & 4 - all sitting in the loft).

You could try a Hagen Stingray 15 - great filters :good: and especially do not clog like the Fluval 2 does or dumps a load of gunk back into the tank as you lift it out.

i like fluval + range i think there good in general, mine have never given me any problems ,touch wood. but i've heard bad stories about the basic fluval's.

:good:

I don't use the carbon replacements on my filters. I use filter floss and a mesh. It's just as effective without having to spend as much on the cartridges.
