Hey all,

As I posted the other day, I've been considering taking my Dwarf African Frogs out of their current tank and putting them into a nano of some sort, mainly because the fish in the community tank almost always eat 90% of the bloodworms I mean to feed them with. I know amphibians don't need to eat super often, but I worry about them starving all the same.

People dissuaded me from the idea of picking up a bumblebee goby as a tankmate the other day (though I still have read a lot to suggest they're really freshwater fish in the wild that do well in brackish tanks in captivity). So I'm looking for the following traits.

1. Does well in a nano (duh)
2. Won't pester frogs (also duh)
3. A slow eater so the frogs can get their own meals in.

I'm absolutely in love with Boraras sp. but can't find any around here.

Any ideas?

Edit: not a betta.

you dont think the frog would try to eat the shrimp?

now i might be wrong but arnt ADF's close to blind? (mabey im crazy) i heard someone say it and mine would jump at anything that moves to try to eat it. i mean anything fish, finger, net, so im thinking a shrimp might look like a blurry mess of a meal to the frog. but who knows ive been wrong before.

ghost shrimp are about the size of adf's if I'm figuring correctly. I don't think there would be a problem.

Actually, I have the ADFs in a tank with cherry shrimp right now, and as far as I can tell, not a single one gets snacked upon.

The frogs do have terrible eyesight. More aptly, they're farsighted, almost blind to anything 3 inches or less in front of them, so they literally cannot find food right in front of their face that the fishes quickly discover.

They hunt by smell. As soon as bloodworms are in the water, they start snapping around looking for them. They will snap at just about anything trying to find them, from each other to fish to shrimp. Once I saw one semi-chase a bamboo shrimp far larger than he was around the tank (ended up on the other side of the tank, away from the food). He couldn't do any damage though.

Anyway, it's certainly theoretically possible a DAF would munch on Cherries, but I've never, ever seen the Cherries hunted by them. I'm sure I'm going to stick a few (along with plants and snails) into the tank with them. I'm just thinking about something to be at the top of the water to sort of balance out the Nano. Maybe white cloud are a good option.

My LFS doesn't carry pygmy cories. And again, since they would share the tank bottom, I'm not sure they're a good option.

As I said, the dwarf rasboras are amazing little animals, and I'd love to have them, but again, the LFS doesn't carry them =/

Well i stand corrected then  i love my shrimp but my adf has since died, never got the chance to have them together

try asking your lfs to order the specialty fish for you. Worked for me

My ADFs have shared a 35 litre Bi-Ube with some Harlequin Rasboras for about a year now with no problems.

The Harlequins are quite a fast and agile fish, but half the bloodworms will drop past them while they are feeding. As the Harlequins never bottom feed, then this leaves plenty of worms free for the frogs. Plus, the Harlequins are never aggressive towards the frogs, and they`re very hardy - which is ideal for the potentially highly fluctuating conditions of a smaller tank.
