I have finally got my dream job in a LFS and I start on Saturday.

I have kept fish my whole life and I am pretty much up to speed in cycling etc but I need to learn more about different species of freshwater tropical fish as I am mainly a saltwater enthusiast.

Can anyone recommend any good books?

I have Dr. Axelrods Mini-Atlas of freshwater aquarium fishes which is good but it doesn't give me common names and doesn't go into any details on individual fish types.

Thanks in advance

The big one is the Baensch atlas- currently 4 vols in English translation, but a lot of the common fish are covered in volume 1 (not the fancy loricariids so much though). A good lfs ought to stock these and be able to refer customers to them. There is also a one-volume photo index, which gives you pictures and names, but not quite so much information. Sometimes you see people selling Baensch second-hand.

yay you got the job, good on you!!

the Baensch atlas's are supposed to be very good. I'd have a look what they actually have in the shop (either for they're reference or for sale), that way when a customer asks you about something if you don't know it you can just go look it up with them. To my mind that's better than just telling the custimer the answer anyway, it encourages them to do they're own research :good:

I have a fair library of marine related books. I am as much of a book nerd as I am a fish nerd. I will probably have a mooch around the second hand book stores and ebay etc and see what I can pick up. It's always good to get some recommendations though. :good:

Oh and YAY FOR ME !!! I GOT THE JOB !!! :hyper: :D  Not that I'm too pleased with myself or anything
