I'm looking for an aquarium that fit in a 17 inch by 17 inch spot on my desk (I would prefer smaller then that especially on the width) in the 5 gallon arena. I also want to grow plants etc What is a good setup? I'd like filter/lights/ to come into what I was looking at the Fluvial spec I like it cause it seems functional, however yet stylish.

Not quite sure on the measurements but you could get a AquaNano 30 or even 40 if you can allow it. They are good tanks and I'm sure lots of people recommend them. :)

Hi there!

We have from this brand the 5G tank. We put plastic plant in it, gravel, 1 ornament. The kit comes with the basic set up. (the filter and the light) You still have to buy the vacuum and the net, a small heater and the maintance products. 5G so, do not buy large fish. You can have 4-5 , 1 inch ones. I learnt it through the sad way.:(  I would go with 3 neon tetras and 2 smaller size tetras like Pristella/gold/lemon/silvertip etc.

Even if it's a small tank you going to love it! Enjoy!

2.5 gallon is too small for anything outside of a snail and shrimp. I found a decent 7 gallon I'm going work on (I have to piece everything together)

Agree with the above.

Rena, neon tetra's need to be kept in a 15 gallon+ tank and also need a school of 6+. So do the other tetra's. Only some fish you can keep in a 5 gal and really the only one's are Scarlet Badis (though sometimes hard to come across but are great little fish), Guppy's and Betta's. Also you can keep shrimp and snails.

If it could fit and you could buy it then this one might work:

Well since this thread is about 5gs I'd say go for a fluval...reef sun makes some very nice lights for growing plants. If you plan on having shrimp I'd just go on amazon and look up sponge filter, they're super cheap, effective, and safe. Bettas do well with them aswell. There's obviously easy to find heaters for a 5 gallon I personally use a marina. And plants you're really not limited...I mean you could grow hair grass, anubias, wisteria, crypts, basically most aquarium plants...

Yea I think I'm going go the guppy route/shrimp route although I'm torn between that and a betta really don't know.

I think I'm going go with a sponge filter as well.
