well after being told to move my goldfish out of my many tank and back to their little bowl, i have found that my main tank is finally not a messy as it was before, for a start their little crap isnt lying around and the water also looks much cleaner, and after al that i dont have to maintain the tank as much as before.

Well all i can say is thanks ttf and the people like yourself for sharing such good info if only i knew about this site when i started an year and a half ago i wouldn't have so much problems as i have (i have actually lost count of that)

Um, so instead of doing the good/best thing and cleaning the tank more, you move the poor goldfish to a bowl thats probably 50 times too small, knowing full well how messy they are, and consider it a good thing? I've looked over the posts and no one has said to move the goldfish back to the bowl :/

Ooofishy, dont be so harsh.

When i was a beginner, (still am but hey!) I found out goldfish werent a good choice too put in a small tank i had. So i took my goldfish back too my fish shop and they put him in one of their tanks. I also had some before when i was younger, and i put them in my next door neighbours pond, they looked so happy there, im sure (after all these years) Theyre still alive and big!

Harsh but true.

Oh my word. The bowl is, apparently, 3l. Barely even one gallon  Again, I combed every thread you've posted in with a fine tooth comb, the only thing been said about the goldfish is that they aren't tropical (true), and also that they grow huge (true, but you don't appear to have taken that into account -_- ) and that they need a very minimum of 20g each (IMO a minimum of 4x2x2, probably more).

yh bit harsh..but to the point :S dont understand the logic in putting the goldies in a smaller tank when complaining about maintenence in the big one? :S

Yeah, the only logic i can see behind putting it in a small bowl is that shaunza does daily water changes.

The 20 gallon idea is for fully grown goldfish i believe. So its ok for now, but must be moved immediately or the fish will suffer many ammonia spikes :(

Considering common goldfish grow to 12" or over (I think Wolf has them as 24" in the CW section), a 20g is nowhere near big enough for two 12"+, messy fish. The get to around the same size as, say, an oscar, have the same sort of mess level, so why the huge difference in tank size?

there not treated or cared for as highly as oscars i supposed,

"JUST THE COMMON GOLDFISH HEY, DONT NEED ANYTHING SPECIAL" :/

well sorry bout the bowl but thats all i have right now so give me a break

And dont worry i have someone to take them off me but they stay in england and are coming to see the family at the weekend so evething will be fine

Honestly is there a goldfish out there that does NOT grow to the size of a small poodle? :X I mean sometimes I see a cute one in a store but I'd hate to stunt a fish in a small tank and they sound like tons of work...think I'll stick to my ottos, corys, betta, tetras and mollies.

Seriously though, are there ANY smaller versions of goldfish to be recommended? In case I'm ever crazy enough to get the urge to buy any? I've learnt never to believe size charts in lfs's....they say dalmation mollies grow to 3 inches  . Nobody told my 5 1/2 inch ones!

yh in my lfs they label things wrong like before i was looking at some glowlights and the man goes "oh u like tose rummy noses??" i went no there glowlights, he said the labels are never wrong so i just played along with it!

Well, AFAIK, the smallest goldfish available is the bubble eye, growing to just over 6".
