HI everyone,

I dont belong in this forum but I thought I would pop in with a few questions/comments about gobies..My husband is an avid fisherman and anytime we fish in the lake he always catches at least one gobie.. I was under the impression that they are just a troublesome fish and not pets.. They are a light brown with no colour whatsoever..

Are they not colourful because they have adapted to our lakes? Or is this a certain type of gobie?

Someone tossed them in the lakes years ago and they have been nothing but trouble for the ecosystem.. It is against the law to throw them back in the water if you catch them while fishing.. We are supposed to dispose of them..

They breed like crazy and there are more then we can count in the lake now and its killing off the rest of the fish population because these little guys scare all the other fish and eat the eggs before they have a chance..

Anyway I just thought I would mention this as I didnt realize they actually get sold as pets..

A Eurasian goby, Neogobius melanostomus, has become established in Canada and the US. Is this the species?

Technically it's a brackish water species, but it seems able to complete its life cycle in freshwater.

Cheers, Neale

PS. They weren't pets. Like a lot of these small Eurasian fish, they got into North America via the ballast water in ships.

LOL.. yup that would be them.. Thanks.. I just saw the name goby and got to thinking that these poor things in the lakes were killed everytime someone caught one.. Hubby said no to bringing any home as pets already!!

thanks for the info :)
