I have a 10 year old giant gourami, around 28 inches. He (I think due to the large bump on his head) lives in a 7x4x3 foot tank and has been quite happy in it since we upgraded him from his 6x3x3 tank around 4 years ago. He has always had a lot of personality, too shy to eat in front of people but quite happy to splash them as soon as they turn around. Recently he has spent a lot of his time swimming back in forth in the tank and hitting the glass at each end at speed and I have seen him try and get a run up for a jump from the tank about 4 or 5 times in the last week. The only thing stopping him from jumping out are the secured lips on the tank for the lid. I am very worried about my fish and I have no idea what to do with him. I would love to see him in a bigger tank/pool and I'm quite sure his problem is just being confined to such a small space for such a monster fish but unfortunately this is not an option for me and I having a very difficult time trying to find anybody with the resources to be about to take him off my hands. How do you stop a gourami from trying to jump from its tank? How do I fix it or what can I do with him? Please help! It makes me cringe every time I see him try and jump, I'm a small female and I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to pick him back up and put him in if he managed to get out anyway.

In the short term, maybe try putting some tall fake plants (I think it would just eat any live plants) at each end of it's tank to disguse the end of the tank, and hopefully it wont be so inclined to try and smash it's way through. Ideally a large pond would be best for it, but maybe the plants at each end will help until you can work out something else with the giant gourami. As a last ditch option for a bigger home for the gourami an old bath tub or poly livestock trough could also work, provided it's cleaned throughly of any harsh cleaning chemicals, you would only be able to see the gourami from the top but at least it might have even more room than a tank.

sorry baccus, but thats absolute drivel, a bath tub?? really? she already has it in a large covered aquaria, we have a giant gourami rescue here is scotland, www.fishorphans.com , we have albino's, commons, redtails, ranging from fry to a 27 year old female, if you need any advice on giant gourami or needing to rehome a giant gourami here in the uk we can help, regards, greig

Use large leafed plants, rather than the likes of Elodea will get destroyed!
