I was thinking about getting a pair of convicts or rams when I asked the woman at the only sane lfs around if she takes peoples fish or fry. She rarely does and she won't take in any cichlids that aren't peaceful and she often has people trying to give her convicts which she won't take because she doesn't have the room and she doesn't need fish who breed like rabbits, not to mention that they don't sell well. So my question is, what do you do with yours? I don't want to end up with fry coming out of my ears, and getting one lone fish each time just makes it even harder to fill the tank without having limited options.

Are there no other LFS's in your area? I would call around and ask other places. I lucked out and one of the places I shop at has agreed to take some of my baby green terrors and possibly some of my baby angels. He's going to give me store credit for them which works great for me!
The only other thing I could possibly suggest is that if you feel you must have 2 of the same kind, try to get them both the same sex. With some fish, its impossible to tell when they are still juveniles tho so that could be really hard.
What size tank do you have? You might want to consider getting two or three different cichlids of similar temperment that shouldn't breed together rather than a pair of one type.

There's one other store but the women that runs it is insane (i.e. "An Oscar will be fine in a thirty gallon, they only grow as big as the tank." HAHAHAHA). She's also used to getting fish and animals from people who just need to get rid of them, so I don' t think she'll go for the whole store credit thing, and I just don't like they way she takes care of her fish. Every where else is too far for me to get to. The only tanks I have are the ones down below and I've got half a mind to just breed the guppies in the big tank because they are driving me nuts. So what kind of cichlids could I get in the thirty gallon without having carnage? (And please no one tell me that I should be worried about my guppys with the pictus, that's what they are THERE for.)
