I will be going to collage in about a year, I am hoping to go to the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Now the trouble is I have to stay in the dorms for my first year of collage. Also fish tanks can only be 20gal or less  . That rules out bringing my 55 gal along, But so far I plan on bringing my 2.5 gal betta tank, one 15 gal tank, two 20 gal longs, and possible a 20 gal high  . Now I am curious how many tanks other members who are in to collage have. It doesn't matter if in you are a dorm or a apartment, also if you are in a dorm how often do you do water changes and how do you do them?

thanks,

when i lived in the dorms i only had a 5g hex. you had better make sure that you are allowed MULTIPLE tanks as many colleges will not allow more than one. also i don't know what the dorms are like, if they're suites and you can keep those tanks in your room it isn't an issue, but if you're looking t a single room dorm, keep in mind that your roomate may not appreciate bing crowded out by fish.

now that i'm in my own apartment i have a 20g and a 29g, and a 55 in the works to upgrade the 29

I'm going to be getting a single room hopefully, it is a big university so I don't think this would be a problem. Unless one of my friends also go there, but I don't think many of them would be able to put up with all the tanks  . Also on the website it simply says "All pets other than fish, in a 20 gallon or smaller tank, are prohibited.". I am mainly wondering if I am planning for a disaster, but if worse comes to worse and I can't take care of all the tanks I can always just empty a few.

i have 1 tank and started college today (16 UK)

Well lucky you  .

cheers,

it may not say you can only have one, but it would still be a good idea to check or you will have a problem on your hands when they tell you you have to get rid of all but one tank. As for water changes, they aren't easy in a dorm with a locker room style bathroom like mine was, if you have a private bathroom, you shouldn't have a problem.

What I tell everybody planning on keeping fish while in college, though, is make sure you understand that you won't be there all the time. There will be a month for winter break where you likely won't be allowed in the dorms - we weren't - and three months for summer break where you won't be in the dorms unless you take summer classes, and at our school we were required to unplug all electrical devices. So you will have to take all those tanks home with you, and I don't know about you but there's definately no room for that many largish tanks in MY car, plus stands, supplies, and fish if transported seperately from their tank, on top of everything else I brought to and from home.

My college I'm going to (Elizabethtown, PA) allows any size tank. Just no carnivorous fish. :D

i had a 5 gal hex and that was pushing the space constraints in my room w/ my roomie
he droped out so i got another tank and they were fine, tho i had a limit of 10 gal total on fish tanks

I am just finishing up college and the apartments I am in allow for multiple fish tanks as long as they are inspected and approved (a pain in the ol' butt) But I have a 30, 20gal, and 10 gal. And one more large one, not sure of gallons. They are fine and the apt has allowed them... I just dread moving day...

I wasn't allowed any tank in Abertay Uni Halls, wasn't allowed a tank in my flat I rented either but well, it kinda appeared one day :p

Good post starrynightxxi, it didn't even occur to me that I might not be able to get into the dorm for months(shows how much I know) . I have been thinking about this since you posted and I think I have found a possible solution. What if I drive down a week or two before the breaks and setup my 55gal and 20gal high at my house. Then drive all the fish and other stuff down when we are let out for break. I would stock both 20gal long tanks so that they can be combined into the 55 gal and the fish in the 15gal would go into the 20 gal high. The drive from Madison to my house is about 4.5 hours and I would probably be able to fit every thing into my parents Durango. Does anyone see anything wrong with this plan?

thanks,

that sounds like a lot of work.... i would just take one or two tanks with me, but thats just me.

Hi there be very careful about how many tanks you take and who you let around your fish....

when I was living on Campus some people put alcohol in my tank they thought it would be funny to see if the fish would get drunk ... boy did I get mad

so just make sure no one drinks round your tanks.:drink:

(In Australia on Campus living ... 3 people live in one unit and share kitchen & living room etc) My tank was down stairs in the lounge room ... I moved it upto my room quick smart

Ask a biology professor to host some aquarium tanks for you. They'll be more than happy to. At least my biology teachers are.
