Hey guys, I don't know if this is a huge problem or not. But at the top of the tank (the top of the water level) I noticed there is some foam in the corner. What would cause that? I do my 25% water changes weekly. The water is clear. All the fish are fine, with the exception of one fish that died today. But the other 8 fish are fine, and not acting as if they are sick. Any ideas if this foam maybe is related to the fish dying? If not how does this foam form??

It could be the filter if it strong causing the water to foam.
Added any meds.
Are the fish heavy breathing or darting around the tank.

Does it happen after every maintence and if so what do you use to clean stuff the tank etc.

Is it actual white foam or just alot of bubbles what fish you own?

I have the same thing going on in my 12 G Eclipse Tank, pump/sponge/bio-wheel, setup. Its 3 days new, has a piece of bogwood thats been soaked for 2 hours in hot water. 4 swords, 1 java fern and a couple of lutea are planted in just gravel. I've added Blackwater Extract on day 2.

No water changes yet, and I was just about to start fishless cycling.

Any comments, suggestions. concerns? Please enlighten me! :hyper:

Thanks, Cheers

Is your tank near the kitchen, or anywhere that has some sort of stuff in the air, like Febreeze?

Stuff form your kitchen, or air fresheners could of landed in your tank causing it to foam up on the surface.

Also, before putting your hand in your tank, do you make sure there is not soap on your hand?

Could be the hands, the tank is in my room, pretty out of the way. Although as Im looking right now almost the whole tank water surface is filled with bubbles. Above my sponge theres tiny bubbles aswell. What causes "foam" build up in tanks usually?

Could be a lot of things...

Meds....

I had bubbles in my tank when I did a fish-in cycle, the bubbles I think were from a high level of ammonia and/or the nitrite.

So, if you just started cycling, that could be your problem.

Hey guys sorry for the delay, thanks for all your input! The fish tank has been running for a long time now. I have 3 electric blue jack dempsey's, 2 regular jack dempseys, 2 tiger oscars, 1 blue lobster, 1 pleco, and 2 zebra fish in a 55 gallon. There was a LITTLE bit of foam in the tank starting to gather about a week ago, and one of the new fish i added came down with ich, so I took out the carbon filteres, added the proper dosage, then did a 25% water change and added a 2nd dosage, and he was cleared of ich. And then today when i went to feed them, there was an unsual build up. So much that when i lifted the cover of the tank to put the food it, some even stuck onto the cover....I've never had this problem before. Also, now that you mention it the fish seem a bit to "chill". They are usually more active then they have been as of late. Even before i added the ich medicine for the new fish. Anything think they can pinpoint anything??

the foam is ammonia build up.. i had a simialr problem at the beginning of this hobby.. i asked my knowlageable fish store and they advised i add a bacterial boost.. they gave me a filter squeeze and told me to do a water change then add their filer squeeze.. cleared up in a couple of days
