I have been running and assortment of 20+ AquaClears for years. They get noisy in two ways. One is the lid doesn't sit quite tightly and it creates a buzzing type noise. Pushing down on the lid to make sure it is firmly in place may stop this noise. When it doesn't, placing a bit of weight, like a small rock, on the lid will usually fix it.

The other problem is related to the impeller and shaft.
-If the shaft is bent, its noisy and only replacing the shaft will fix it.
-If the plastic piece on the impeller develops cracks anywhere, this noise can only be fixed by replacing it.
-If there is gunk or sand in the impeller well, cleaning it and the impeller will fix it.

Sometimes a filter is just defective and needs to be replaced. I have never had this happen but it is possible.

Hope this helps.
