My present 4 trays in my Fluval 407 has bottom tray, Fluval black course sponge, and two floss pads on top, the next 3 trays are filled with ceramics.
I've noticed on You Tube a few recommend, just having the two trays of ceramics and the second tray from the top stuffed with Polyfill floss, which I have, I have a 200 litre tank, if I did cut the ceramics to two trays and put in the floss would it cause an ammonia spik
my reason for doing this is, I'm always looking for crystal clear water.

No ammonia spike expectore, unless the tank is super overstocked. But a watchful ese never gets too surprized…

If you use 10 ppi foam followed by 30 ppi foam I doubt you would need filter floss and the foam would be a much better media for BB than ceramics. Ceramics, once they get coated with that brown mulm/gunk are almost useless.

The poly wool is going to be very effective but it wont last long before you have to replace it.

A fine sponge with 30-45 ppi will give the same results and will be reusable and easier to clean much longer.

You can go up to 65 ppi if you want, but that will clog really fast.
