Hey all, I recently (as in yesterday) bought a small (mabye 6") Flowerhorn cichlid from my LFS for $40. It's not the best quality one but I'd rather make sure I can handle one before I spend loads on one.

Currently I have him in a 40gallon aquarium, play sand substrate, 100 gallons of filtration spilt between an internal filter and a canister filter. All I have in the tank are some rocks, but they don't really look that great as they're piece of natural rock that were cut into brick shapes when my house was being built.

I was wondering if anybody could show me any setups for their flowerhorns, so that I can get a better idea of how to make mine look nice.

Thanks.

These are my opinions:

55gal minimum for flowerhorn.
Blue background. (anything colorfull is OK, blue seems to bring out their color best, black makes their colors fade or go very dark.)
Colorull substrate, crushed coral is good.(same rules apply as the background. sickly bright colored gravel works real well)
Min ph.7
min temp 28c (don't go higher than 30)
No bogwood, a few sickly colored decorations and rocks.
For good redness and KOK (head growth) I feed mine the following:

Mon - Hikari gold pellets, blood worms, krill - twice in a day.
Tue - Humpyhead pellets(head growth food) and High spirulina beefheart(for red color) - twice in a day.
Wed - Hikari gold pellets only. - Twice a day
Thu - No FOOD
Fri - Fresh Squid (I live next to the ocean), Humpyhead pellets, Spirulina beefheart. - once in a day.
Sat - Humpyhead pellets, Spirulina beefheart, blood worms. - twice in a day
Sun - Ocean Clear "sparkles" pellets. (for pringing out the pearls / sparkles) - Twice in a day.
