A friend of mine is after setting up a tank and asked me what fish to put in

me being new i havent a clue to be honest

all i know is my peppered corys are easy to look after and touch wood none have died yet

he is after something around the size of my german rams maybe a little larger to go in a 180 litre tank

whats he got already? alot of cichlids r nice but as cichlids go most are aggressive.

let us know whats in there and we'll help u more :good:

Some zebra danios are good but need to be kept in 6.

the tank will be from new so zero fish

it will be cycled with a filter that i have had running in my tank for him

he likes the look of convict and firemouth cichlids

what are they like to keep and in what size group??

or any cichlid of about the same size and in what size group

What size of tank will he have? Depends on the size of the tank.

Assuming that the tank is prepared properly, most fish fish are no trouble to look after. I know it sounds cliched, but it's true that if you look after the water, you'll generally not have to worry about the fish. A little research goes a long way; after all, choosing fish is very much down to personal taste. Tell him to find out what his water conditions are, then make a list of fish which suit those conditions. Oh, and tell him to ignore anything his LFS tells him about all those shelves full of miracle liquids they want him to buy. Dechlorinator/dechloraminator, a good test kit and regular water changes are all he needs. And a bottle of protozin; despite what I said about miracle liquids, this is one you should always have handy.

I agree, go with some danios. I've got some glowlight ones which are a nice bright colour. I cycled my tank WITH them a few months ago and we still haven't lost a single one. They've had to put up with all sorts of beginner mistakes and still seem happy.
