My platy is floating on its side on the water surface since a couple of days. But it comes "back to life" and is still eating when I feed it, thouh. Is there any hope or is that it? I change the water about every 4 days and the temp. is 76 F. Any advice?

Size of tank in gallons or litres.
How many fish and which type.
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

Does the fish look bloated.
What does it look like when the fish goes to the toilet.
What do you feed your fish.

[10 Gal.
2 female Platies (one of them is the floating one)
2 female 4 month old Platies
3 neon tetra
2 small plecs

The fish is very skinny, I'm feeding them Tropical fish flakes, freeze dries bloodworms and cooked peas (once in awhile). Poop looks normal,

ammonia is always around 0.5, can't get it lower, not with water changes, not with the ammonia controll tabs - i tried it all...
ph 7.8
nitrite and nitrate are almost 0

What filter are you using.
Plecs are massive waste producers so need to maintain the tank more.
How often do you do a gravel vac and water change.
Check your tap water for ammonia.

Being thin can be old age, fish tb, to internal parasites.
Any fish showing signs of clear mucas poo, long stringy white poo, or red poo.

I wouldn't feed freeze dried foods they cause swim bladder.
I stopped feed my fish freeze dried foods as they would bloat up.

Filter is an aqua-tech 5 and I exchange the cardrige once a month. Gravel vac and water change every 4 days.
No ammonia in my tap water, but the waste from the plecs might be the cause - I didn't know that they cause so much dirt.
My fish is acting really strange. For a couple of hours a day its just floating on its side - like it's dead and all the sudden it comes back to life, a couple of times I alredy wnated to fish it out, but then it swam away again.... Maybe it's really because it's old? well, we have her since August, I don't know how to tell the age of a fish.

Is she bloated, or thin.
Swimming on there sides can be bacterial to internal parasites.
What does it look like when she goes to the toilet.
Check her anus to see if its enlarged or red and inflamed.

She is very thin although she is eating.
There is no swelling or other differnces as far I can see.
It looks kind of red/brown when she poops, sometimes white and stringy
How do I treat her, if she has parasites or if it is bacterial?

When fish eat and are still thin it can be internal parasites, and long stringy white poo and red poo are signs of internal parasites.
Once fish are infested with them the damage has been done to the internal organs.
You need to treat the whole tank.
The med might be to late for the fish that has the internal parasites only time will tell when you add the med if she gets better.
Levaimsole for camallanous worms.
or this med.

That's sad, but thanks, I'll try it. Hopefully I can save the others.....
