I plan on buying a 15 gallon tank very soon I just need to start getting some ideas on what type of fish I could keep in there so I can do some research. I would like a community tank with lots of colours and fish at all levels of the tank. For the top I was thinking 2 male dwarf gourami's as they come in nice colours. Thats all i've got so far so if anyone has any suggestions even if they do not include the dwarf gourami it would help alot so I can start research. Thanks.

Neon or cardinal tetras are a pretty fish as are Gold Mountain Cloud Minnows. White Cloud Mountain Minnows and Endlers are also fairly colourful. Or you could go for something like Guppies. :)

Dwarf gouramis are beautiful but not very hardy; I would leave them for a mature tank. Honey gouramis are said to be a little bit tougher. Anyway, don't get two male gouramis- they are territorial and might end up fighting. Get a male on his own (they don't mind) or a trio with 1 male, 2 females.
For the bottom layers, you can't get anything more entertaining than corydoras, though they are not so colourful. Khuulie loaches have a little more colour- they, like corys, need to be in groups to become really outgoing. Peacock gobies are really colourful, just make sure that they are eating well before you buy. 1 male and a harem of females is best for these.
None of these fish are hardy enough to cycle a tank- so you will want to look up the topic on fishless cycling.

ok I won't get 2 males then 1 will do. Anyone else got any ideas?

Rummy nose tetras look nice, although tehy are sensitive to changes in water quality, so you should add them after your tank's been running for at least a few weeks. Maybe some Phantom Tetras? They have great personality and look nice when contrasted with gold or yellow colored fish (IMO).

ok i've decided on getting some tetras for the middle but don't know whether to get neons or cardinals with a group of 6 or 7. my 1 dwarf gourami and maybe 3 cory's for the bottom or 3 loaches.

will male guppies be alright with tetras and the dwarf gourami or will they get nipped?
