Hi all, I have a 10 gallon planted with a female pearl gourami. Not a lot of space, I know. I'm trying to decide what small schooling fish to add. Options: neons, cardinals, harlequins, rummy-noses. Normally I like having a few species, but it looks like this tank size amounts to two species?? Unless there is some fish that is more solitary or paired that would be compatible with gouramis and tetras? Any opinions on which species? Also, how many would you recommend?

Criteria: stick together fairly well (I've noticed neons don't always shoal well); middle of tank (again, neons seem to like bottom); colour (love rummy-noses and cardinals/neons)

From reading here and elsewhere, harlequins and rummy-noses seem best for shoaling, but general consensus is that 10 gallons is too small? I've only had them in 20 gallons in the past. How are harlequins for activity? I've never owned them.

Between neons and cardinals, I'm leaning towards cardinals because they are bigger and because of the above-mentioned issues I have with neons. BUT some say that cardinals are more difficult to sustain?? I've never owned cardinals either.

Thanks for all input!

Yeah, I read that sticky, but it doesn't address the fish I'm interested in at the moment (though those endlers are gorgeous!).

hmmmmm. If you plan on upgrading soon, i would suggest a school of Cardinal Tetras ( a little bit bigger than neons, but alot more colorful).
