Hi all, im new to the hobby and have recently purchased my very first tank. Its an Interpet Aquatropic 100 (160L).

I bought this tank back last week and only yesterday had the time to set it up.

Now 24hrs after setting it up and getting everything going i have a bit of an issue. The water has gone really cloudy, like someone has poured a pint of milk into the tank. Now i understand that this is some sort of bacteria bloom. How can this be resolved?

Also, im using Interpet Filter Start to collonise my filter with benificial bacteria, has anyone had any experience with this? is it any good? how long roughly will it take to work?

thanks in advance,

Dan :good:

Have you put any fish/any products/ammonia in as an ammonia source?

If so, it will be a bacterial bloom and will go crystal clear again in a day or two

Welcome to the hobby.

Here's a good guide by backtotropical on bacterial blooms, hopefully it will help you out:

The interpet filter start you are using may not really be any use. Most of the bottles of stuff for sale which say they kick start your filter, add bacteria etc etc are next to useless. It is impossible to keep bacteria in these bottles alive if they ever did contain any, and they would need to be kept refrigerated, and with a source of food, which they aren't. By the time they would reach the shelves any beneficial bacteria they had in them would die.

did you wash the gravel/sand before putting it in? what is in the tank?

Yes i have gravel as a substrate and it was rinsed thoroughly befire being placed in the tank.

All i have added to the water is Nutrafin aqua plus, to dechlorinate the water. plus Interpet Filter Start to start the cycle.

Right, thats probably a bacterial bloom but id stop using that stuff and read up on fishless cycling. A word of advise, dont buy fish for a while. Ive recently seen what fish-in cycling does to the fish and its not nice.
