I haven't bothered with "bio media" for years and just use plain old sponge.
A while ago I did a big clear out and instead of chucking out all my unopened bags of bio media that came with various filters over the years I dropped some into my filters.
When I set up my breeding project I wanted plants that I could remove in seconds - and the tank has no substrate. My first attempt was 2.5" pots with a little sand (left of pic). This meant I had to plug the hole so for the next lot I put in I just used the pots upside down and pushed multiple stems through the hole (right back of pic). But the pots still took up a lot of space and I wanted to add more plants. Didn't want to spend money and also didn't want to risk any contamination from metals so I raided the back of an HOB et voila

3 Ambulia stems pushed through the hole and cut flat along the bottom. Time will tell if its heavy enough to keep them down when the plants grow up

I don't actually care what this tank looks like but I will be using the idea in the others, and it will allow nicely manicured shrubs with minimal maintenance effort :p

It should be enough to give the plant the time to root in the substrate for sure.

I used ceramic rings and PVC coated wire to make floating plant hanger. And it works great.

That's a nice idea, may give it a try.
These will never root because there is no substrate. That's a sheet of astro turf its sitting on :)
