ok i have a 55 gallon tank. it is been running for like 10 or 11 months now and i have a beginer filter in there and it was for a 60 gallon tank. well i saw a way better filter and i bought it and it is for a 75 gallon tank. so my qustion is well that is a 135 gallons of filtration for a 55 gallon tank. is that ok or no. i mean the fish seem to be ok and the water current isnt moving them around. and i am not over stocked. so i figaured that it wouldnt hurt? right?

thats what i thought to.. but at the lfs the ladie was like that is horrible and i was like why and she really didnt give me a reason. she said some one told her that it was horrible and kill all my fish. she told me to go home and take on out fast. but i was thinking i dont see how it would be so bad. i mean there will be more bacteria and that is good im not over stocked. so how could this possible be any were close to bad....

as per usual she clearly knows nothing, and is just telling you some vague thing someone told her. I could be corrected but I dont know of anything bad that can happen from over filtration

Overfiltration is good.

More biological filtration = less NH3/4, NO2. More mechanical filtration = cleaner/clearer water.

The "lady" in the LFS is wrong. You can tell her so. Point her in this direction, she may learn something.

The only potential problem is "excess" water movement that some fish don't appreciate. In this case simply move the filter outputs accordingly. Spray bars are good.

sorry i still am kind of new at this game not a year yet? what is a spray bar? what does it do? thanks

yes the only issue would be if there was too muh water movement, but most fish will be quite happy with plenty :good:

a spray bar attaches to the output of your filter, it's a bit of tube with loads of holes in, so instead of loads of water blasting out of one place, a much slower smaller flow comes from a number of places :)

My mate tried one of those spray bars but we couldnot get it to work it kept backing up with water then squirting it out of the top of the filter.
