I need an gravel cleaner but am afraid if it will stress my cories in my 43litre aquarium. Its hexaGONAL also will it suck up my gravel sand or not? Thanks!
You need to vac the substrate at least once a week when you do your water change to get rid of uneaten food and poo and to keep your water stats correct. Your fish will soon get used to it and actually try to join in!!
You can buy a siphon cheaply in the shop or on ebay. Get a self starting one whereby you just shake it up and down and it will start to siphon off the water. You do your tank clean and water change all in one.
If you have gravel plunge the cleaner into the gravel. Don’t just siphon the top of the gravel, the majority of the waste is on the bottom. By pulling up and down on the tube, waste particles are freed and will get sucked up by the aquarium gravel cleaner then the gravel will fall back to the bottom of the tank. While continuing this motion, move the tube every few seconds in a grid pattern back and forth until the all the gravel is cleaned.
If you have sand hold it about an inch or two above the sand. Move your siphon in circular motions to agitate the sand and pick up the waste that is released. Adjust the siphon higher or lower depending on how much sand is being siphoned away. Expect to lose a little bit during the process.
