Chemical, this use a chemical reaction to remove chemical toxins like ammonia etc etc.

Mechanical, these are mainly for removing suspended solids in the water. Best used as a prefilter

Biological, their are 2 types of bacteria Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter and the are used to change toxic chemicals into less toxic one's.
