Hello :)

I have a 55 (US)gallon planted tank, and i currently have a dual hang-on type filter.Altho i clean it reagularly is just seams like it not working so well anymore, and I am looking to replace it. So,I would be thankful for any advise on what type/brand I should get.I wouldn't mind going a LITTLE heavy on the filtration either.......From what I've seen around exstenral canisters look nice, but as i've only had hang-ons i don't know anything about them.

I would go for a rena XP3 and keep the HOB filter too. It lets you perform maintenance on one or the other without the risk of wiping out your bio filter.

Check out marineland.com and the H.O.T. Magnum. for anything 50 gal or under its the best I've seen. It is a full flow canister 250 gph with your option of standard media, standard media w/carbon, or 1 micron media for water polishing. It comes with a 'bio-wheel that aids in removing fish waste at a molecular level and in the US costs less than $80.00. Scott

Ehiem external canister, ProII or ProIII if you are good for cash

As with all ehiem stuff its durable and generally dont break, easy to run, maintain and you can pickup bits for them (should it break) on most sites. Also the availability for thier filter material is as common as apples in a supermarket.
