my female betta is dying or may even be dead. i can't really tell because he is not lying on his side, but is perched upright on the tank bottom.

her belly is slightly swollen and white, to an extent resembling those of well-fed bettas i've seen at the lfs. does the whiteness mean she has been dead for quite some time? the last time i checked on her was around 10 hours ago and she was fine.

all water stats (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, ph) are normal.

the first thing i can think of for the betta's state is the recent introduction of hikari sinking wafers and hbh shrimp pellets to the tank. they were meant for the cories, but i think the betta ate some or all of it.

i also had willow tree branches in the tank, some parts of which were rotting. could the betta have rubbed against those parts or even eaten some of it?

does anyone know what may be the probable cause behind all this? what can i do about the current situation? all help's appreciated.

ps. i suspect the hbh shrimp pellets might be expired, but i emailed hbh about it and they told me that the lot no. 082306 is the manufacturing date of august 23, 2006, and that it's good for 3 years if unopened. i suspect hbh was lying because there was another can of hbh shrimp pellets whose first two digits were 00, which clearly do not represent any month.

I had a similar experiance with a male betta in the past. The willow tree branches that rotted seems to be what did it. Bettas are sensitive at times with bacteria. Mine died...possibly from bacteria also...sometimes these things are unexplainable..my betta's stomach was inflamed and swollen like your betta...i hope yours won't die but I think it may. As for now change half of her water, feed her blood worms and see how she does.

i swung the net around her to see if she would move, but nothing. i'm afraid she has passed away.

RIP female betta 10/06-02/07

should i bury her in the backyard? in the past, i just throw them in the garbage bin. however, i think it's time for a change.

Yea I feared that would happen. Sorry about your little fishie.
When I have fish die I flush them in the potty.

Supposedly, flushing them is bad for the sewage system. It can release bacteria into the sewer and pollute stuff. I personally don't give a care about others around me and their sewage system, so I flush them. If you really loved it, you could bury it. Be sure to put it in a box and wrap it securely or animals WILL dig it up. D: I'm sorry about your loss.

If you have a garden you could put it under a plant. That way it will help it grow.. *shrugs* It would be like a reminder of your lil betta. or ya know.. do that when the weather permits that is.

RIP miss betta :(

Bury it. Its the right thing to do if you loved it so much.

so which reason do you think was the cause behind the betta's death?

1.eating possibly expired fish food
2.eating food that was unsuitable for a betta (but i think sinking wafers and shrimp pellets are ok, right?)
3.eating food that somehow clogged the intestine??
4.infection from rotting willow tree branches in tank (this has been pointed by a member as the probably cause, but i just want to hear other opinions)

thanks again
