Should i really give my fish what they can eat on 3 minutes?

That seems like ALOT!

I give them a small sprinkle and they still poo more than their on body length sometimes xD

I have a fully stocked, 26US gallon tank. I feed once per day and it is easily consumed in less than one minute. Let your fish be your guide. You want to see a bit of a feeding frenzy but not enough food that it starts accumulating on the bottom. Better to underfeed a bit than to overfeed.

This 3 minute rule fails to take into account that different fish eat at different speed and that different foods don't take the same time to consume. A plec rasping away at a courgette may need hours, but it shouldn't take as long as 3 minutes for a greedy platy to gobble up the appropriate amount of flakes. I'd say for most surface eaters eating flakes 1 minute is ample.

i got advise from my local fish shop about this, they said "the food company guidelines (feeding 2-3 timed daily for however much they consume in 2-3minites) is a total lie, unless you have a external filter this will cause to much amonia in the tank". i used to folow the guide lines and my fish were fine for about 2 months but then they started to rappidly die, oneday exelent amonia (0ppm) next it had spiked due to a build up of fish waste. i feed my 30l biOib with, 1 male gourami, 3 platys, 2 white cloud moutain minnows, 2 red and blue colombian tetras and 2 harlequnis 4-41/2 flackes crumbled up every other day. read any trust-worthy book/magazien and they will say 1/3 flake to 1inch of fish, a hungry (not starved) fish tank is a healthy fish tank.
just a thing i tried and learnt from my mistakes, read up about your certain fish requierements but i say always feed them a little but less to keep them active and healthy
hope this helps, shang hi
