In the year and a half I have been very fortunate not to have any major sickness with any of the fish I keep however now I have one and would appreciate any advise on a course of action.

Details:

Fish: Honey Gourami.

Symptoms: A whole formed on the back end of the long top fin of the fish and now its right eye is bulging out :(

I have another Honey Gourami and using him as a sample there are no other symptoms scales are fine, no reddening of the Anus or gills no slime on him he appears to swim stably and is eating when food is put in the tank.

The Tank Juwel Trigon 350 that's about 350 Litres plus what is in the fluval, Lightly planted with some bog wood and some rocks, 2 plastic caves and Argos sand substrate.

Running an external canister filter (Fluval 405) along with the internal 1000 pump set that comes with most Juwel cabinets (no carbon as media currently) 2 Hydor nano power heads, 2x 300 watt Juwel heaters.

Water Stats:

Temperature: +27 deg
PH: 7.8 - 8.0
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 10

Usual maintenance regime:

30% water change every 4 to 5 days, Once a month all rocks, caves and bog wood are removed and cleaned with old tank water along with a 60% water change.

I only clean the filters when the water flow reduces.

Stock:

8 Clown Loaches Between 1.5 and 3.5 inches (any meds used will usually need to be halved because of these guys)
8 Panda Cory
11 Cardinal Tetra
5 Glow light Tetra
5 Prastilla Tetra
6 Platys
4 Kuhli Loaches
2 Honey Gourami

Currently I do not have an Isolation tank but that may change tomorrow when and if I need to get med's because of the Loaches I am not really Keen to med the main tank

Any advice would be gratefully accepted

Regards onebto.

With the hole in the fish aswell could any fish been bullying him.

I think I would issolate him and use anti internal bacteria med by interpet.

Hello Wilder thanks for getting back to me.

Well it sounds like I need to get a Quarantine tank and an internal Bacteria medication.

I am now treading in unknown territory.

So the Quarantine/hospital tank I guess does not have to be anything special not to big I would hope what would you recommend?

Obviously a small heater and pump.

Do you need any substrate or plants in it?

I would be able to put some media from one of my filters in the tanks pumps to help it cycle up but Obviously I am not going to have time to cycle it properly well here comes the twice a day water changes :good:

Will it be okay to med a small tank that has not been cycled? even if it has one sick fish as mentioned I can put some mature media in there.

Finally meds I am in the Uk so I need to look for a internal bacteria med made by interpet if possible? something like this: http://www.charterhouse-aquatics.co.uk/catalog/interpet-treatment-anti-bacteria-100ml-p-1276.html

Ill see if one of my LFS does it tomorrow when I get the small tank

Thank you again onebto

Sounds fine as long as you have a heater and airstone.

If the tanks not quite cycled keep an eye on water stats.
If you have to preform a water change during a med course. Just add the correct amount of med back to water removed.

Anti internal bacteria med by interpet.
Or esha 2000.

Match ph and temp in issolation tank before you move the sick fish.
Good Luck.

Well things do not look to good for my first fish emergency

I got the hospital tank set it up put some media from my tank in the filter to help with cycling.

Watched the water stats like a hawk done 80% water changes twice a day Sunday his eye swelling was going down he seemed alot healthier ate a bit of food.

I came down this morning getting ready for work checked the water stats all Green but he was perched by the filter at the top of the tank breathing but not looking to good

I agree it's not sounding to hopeful.
Bless him.

The problems with lfs meds they only really any good on mild bacteria infections.
Once bacteria infections advance there hard to cure unless you have antibiotics.

If he's in issolation all I can suggest is doubling the interpet dose.
You can double dose in severe cases according to interpet.
A member got in contact with interpet and suggested double dosing in issolation.

Unfortunatley He did not make it.

Well at least I now have a small tank for Emergencys I am going to put the little pump in my main tank running constantly as it will then have decent mature media in it ready as Unfortunatley this I guess will not be the last incident.

Again thank you again for your kind advice
