When i bought a new external filter, i had them running along side each other for 3-4 weeks (although people do say two would be ok, but i wanted to be sure), and then just removed the internal one. I had no issues doing it this way. I guess you could do it the other way, but my thinking was if it is coping now, then lets not upset it. Add the new one and get that one up to par with the old one.

I moved the media from my internal to the external and all was fine.. I've read people recommend both ways, and I guess double filtering has it's benefits, but it depends how impatient you are :D I couldn't wait to get my internal out of there!

if you gonna run them side by side, 6-8 weeks i say, unless your tank is very low stocked then perhaps you could do it sooner (3-4 weeks) If you are running a mature filter and new filter side by side and then taking the mature one OUT, you are basically cycling a brank new filter and new sponges from scratch. It will also take longer to "cycle" as its not doing all the "work" only 50%.

unless there is a mighty good reason i would always put the old media in the new filter, even if it isnt the ideal media, you can always change it bit by bit for the more appropriate "new" media every few weeks or so

I say keep them both running for 2 weeks, then take the media out of the internal one and add it to the external one and then take the internal one out. I have 3 filters working on my large tank at the moment waiting for my new external to sort itsself out then im taking the smaller internal out but putting the media in the externals basket. hope that made sence.
