Ex-LFS manager/ keeper of over 30 danio species
hi all
I discovered this on fishbase and just had to share it with you.
there are over 16,000 species without an English common name listed on fishbase
they are holding a public competitionto allocate those fish a common name and
you could have you name chosen by the judges and officially applied to that fish.
you will also have your name on fishbases entry for that fish as a collaborator.
yes there is no real prize but being able to say you named a fish, or lots of fish, should be reward enough.
the full list is here http
/64.95.130.5/tools/NameExplorer/SpeciesList.php but you can't jump to each letter of the alphabet, so
you will have to view every page to find a particular fish. if you are looking for one that starts in M then you'll be there for a long time.
some of the listings that have no common name are starting to appear with a direct link to the competition,
look under the scientific name at the top left for the link button.
I've noticed that sometimes there are too many people using fishbase and it can't connect you so I use two different URLs for it
the main one being http
/fishbase.org/search.php but if that don't connect I use http
/filaman.uni-kiel.de/search.php
so go on, get your thinking caps on and start submitting those entries
