My LFS has these in and am curious if there just to have a tank for themselfs or that you could mix them in a community tank?

As far as I understand, you don't want tankmates that are too boisterous. They can easily be outcompeted for food.
Need to have a sand substrate, and are really sensitive to water parameters. If you want more than one you want 5+ and quite a big tank.
 
Never had them myself though.

Yes either one on it's own or 5+, they end up quite aggressive and territorial if I am not mistaken?
As stated above, super sensitive to nitrates and need a well matured tank.
Not to mention they get to about 8-10" or so which isn't classified as a small fish in my book!
