Just curious if anyone is using an Eheim 2227 wet/dry filter? If so, is there a need to use an air pump in the tank or does the filter have an air supply? Just wondering because mine is supposed to be delevered tomorrow so I can finaaly get rid of my bio-wheels which have trouble turning. :D

jus make sure the outputs making some surface agitation (ripples) and that will oxygenate your water jus fine.

airstones only help because they create the ripples u need. the actual bubbles they release rise too fast to be absorbed into the water.

Ok, sounds good. After it goes in, Im planning to finish tidying up the tank by getting rid of the unsightly air wand and changing out the decorations for some granite rocks that I found. Will post pics of it later. Royce

There is no need for an air pump to make the eheim wet/dry series work well. The filter has a breathing pipe that must be placed witht he top well above the water level of the tank.

You will probably need a degree in setting up eheim wet dry filters though. Both input and output pipes must be EXACTLY the same length and there is a strict height range on which the filter can run (measured from the top of the tank's water level to the bottom of the filter).

I tried one for a couple of months and probably had it running right for a total of 10 days. I ended up giving up and trading it for a large classic. But if you can get it to work, you have a very good filter.

Best of luck setting it up!

Well my new filter came in today. It took awhile to get it working. I'll have to turn it off for a short bit tomorrow to measure the pipes. The most painful experience was trying to get the siphon started as the instructions do not say how. I finally had to open the unit, fill it with water and also disconnect the pipes and fill the intake tube. After that it started up a little noisy at first, probably due to air in the pipe. Then it was just a matter of setting the spraybar where it would cause waves. The only other obstacle is to trim the hoods out for the pipes and to seal off where the HOB's were.

EDIT: thanks for the advice on the air pumps SamUK and andywg. But will I still need to add more aeration during any possible medicating?

The wet dry will give far more aeration than an airpump could hope due to it's method of filtration, so I would see it as somewhat superfluous.

I read that to start the initial syphon you connect it all up with the outlet closed and inlet open and suck on the breather tube. That should get it to start coming down.

Since finally getting the filter up and running, it seems to be doing a great job. All of the air wands have been taken out and it looks a lot less cluttered. I've been keeping a close eye on everything. The next addition hardware-wise, will be a uv clarifier to help keep everything crystal clear. It is kinda comical to watch some of the fish waiting out by the spray bar to get a free ride around the tank during the filter output cycle. Also, it came with a sponge prefilter for the intake which it said to remove after about 6-8 weeks. Is it necessary to keep it on or go on and take it off? The only thing I've found, is that the impeller is a bit noisy, is this common?

I would take the prefilter out after it has started and got running fine. I think it is just an extra step of filtration that is unnecessary and will only reduce the flow rate of the filter.

I never really noticed the impellor to be that noisy, though mine rarely worked propery. Have you tried knocking it to make sure there are no air bubbles in the system?

That's probably what I'll do here later is to go on and take it off. As for the chatter, I haven't done anything yet to try and quiet it down. Although like you said it does sound like it may be an air bubble trapped in the housing.

sorry for bringing such an old post to the top again but I do have a question.

How do you know if it is working properly?, Mine fills itself and then emptys itself, I assume this is the correct way for it to work?

Cheers

I believe it should cycle through filling and emptying every 30-50 seconds.

Mine tended to empty and never fill up, which is no greatly bad thing, just irritated me.
