as some of you know, i've had an egg bound female rosy barb since october. i think some or all of the eggs have rotted inside her.

if so, does this lead to an internal bacterial infection or an internal fungal infection? i need to know so i can use the appropriate antibiotic.

also, can a fish reabsorb or expel infected eggs?

hi,
i know when fish are stressed then can reabsorb eggs back into their body but i dont know about infected eggs.

are you positive she is egg bound and its not a tumour or growth growing inside her?

well, i read that a tumor is usually a bump on one side, but the female barb is equally bloated everywhere. so i think either it's kidney infection/failure, egg bound, or both.

When fish are egg bound epson salts baths to help draw the fluiids out.
Yes they can get an infectiion when eggs or fry are rotting inside them.
I would issolate the fish and use a bacterial med if its not to late.

1 tsp per gallon of epsom salt for 2 weeks had no effect, and neither did a week of 1 tbsp per gallon epsom salt dips.

if i try again, should i use 1 tsp or 1 tbsp per gallon for a live-in bath?

With eggbound angels you use the epsom & don't feed at all for 4 weeks. This is in hope that during the extended fast (starvation) the body will reabsorb the eggs.

what if the eggs are decaying inside the female? i don't think they'll be absorbable then.

also, i have some kanamycin. should i treat with it and for how long? will using it for too long cause kidney damage?

I would only use antibiotics in issolation as they wipe the benefical bacteria out in the filter.
Should tell you how long to treat in the instructions.
If you use meds to long they can cause damage to the organs, if you follow the instuctions on dosage and length of time the fish should be fine.
Don't forget to increase aeration with the med.
