Hi all ,

I purchased a larger tank last week and 1 item that came with it looks like a syphon of some sorts (Picture below)

On the top it says easy clean which made me think it could be some sort of gravel vac ?

On the filter that came with it (Fluval 3plus pump/filter system) there is a nozle which looks the same size in diameter as the tubing on the syphon . so am guessing i place this tube on the nozzle and immerse the tube into the water ? which in result will clean the gravel , or is it simply a water syphon ?

Most likely just a coincidence. The nozzle on the filter is most likely either where the intake or outlet tubing attach.

Thanks for the reply's.

Am a little confused as to how this work's , as am assumeing the top nozzle will act like the main one , ie pumping the clean water out , so surley attaching the gravel vac to the pump is only going to disturb all the waste allowing it to float freely around the tank ?

Put the wide part of the gravel vac in the water, get yourself a bucket, suck on the tubing and before you get a mouth full put it in the bucket, and then move the vac around in small circles to clean your gravel.

you're making this too complicated. :) You don't have to attach the vac to anything. Put the end of a hose in a bucket, and the other end of the vac into the tank and - if your tank's deep enough - you should just be able to hold the vac vertically, bounce it up and down a bit to force the water into the tube, and presto - a suction starts. (Sucking on the end of the hose works too, but then you risk getting tank water in your mouth, which while probably not harmful, just seems kinda gross). Then wiggle the end fo the vac down into the gravel and the syphon action will suck up all the gunk. Just don't forget to watch the water level of the bucket and overflow it onto the carpet!

yes, it's a marineland gravel vac i believe.

to use it, fill the vac with tank water (by submerging it horizontally) while pressing your thumb against the tube end. with thumb still pressed and vac out of the tank, release the thumb and let water spurt into the bucket from the tube end until the vac part is almost empty of water.

then press your thumb against the tube end again, and slowly submerge the gravel vac horizontally. release your thumb and water will start pouring into the bucket.

it's easier than it sounds, provided the tank is higher than the bucket.

is that a clip on the end of it? So you could clip it onto the side of the bucket? if it is, that's a bit of a winner, as the end of my tube somehow fell out of my bucket this arvo and dumped around 2 lt's of water on the floor!

Yes it is a clip for the side of the bucket Jozlyn, I own the exact one. It is very handy, whenever I miss place it or forget to use it I always end up with wet socks and carpet.
